Mohammad Kaif Reminisce the Debut of MS Dhoni on 16th Anniversary

Mohammad Kaif

Mohammad Kaif, a former Indian batsman, praised MS Dhoni very much as the social media marked the 16th anniversary of the debut of the former captain in India. Dhoni made his ODI debut in Chattogram for India on 23 December 2004 against Bangladesh. Unfortunately, the wicket-keeper was running out for the first-ball duck at his debut. But then he went on to score more than 10,000 ODI runs.

MS Dhoni retired earlier this year on August 15th; resulting in the most illustrious career any captain might ever think of. The Ranchi-born soared to unparalleled heights, becoming the first captain in cricket history to win all three ICC trophies; the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy; along with the Indian Test Team at the top of the ICC rankings. In addition to it, he had won three IPL titles and two Champions League titles for India.

Mohammad Kaif heaps high praise on MS Dhoni

Mohammad Kaif remembers the first time he met Dhoni while playing the Duleep Trophy, heading the side of the Central Region. After being part of India A Tours, Dhoni played as a keeper-batsman for the East Zone opposition.

“The first time I noticed Dhoni, I was the captain of the Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy. And he was playing for East Zone, not as a captain, a wicketkeeper. He had also toured for India A,” Mohammad Kaif told Star Sports.

The 45-year-old admits that one of his friends had taught him a lot about MS Dhoni’s hitting power and his knack for smashing the big sixes. Kaif, who was Man of the Match in Dhoni’s ODI debut, says that neither he nor any of his teammates would have imagined the long-haired wicket-keeper to lead India to a place of unfathomable dominance of world cricket.

“I had a friend in Lucknow who told me ‘Kaif, there is a player. Watch him. He has long hair and I’ve never seen anyone hit sixes like he does. All of us who were playing at that time – I, Zaheer, Harbhajan, Sehwag – none of us thought that he could captain India the way he did, who would lift Indian cricket to such heights,” Mohammad Kaif revealed.

Dhoni is expected to play for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2021; as confirmed by himself in CSK’s last league game in the UAE – after his team failed to reach the playoffs for the first time.
